Independent? No! Interdependent? Yes!!!

There are different views of what we think of globalization , well this is mine.
I am of the view that globalization is good.

Globalization has helped us move rapidly from being world apart to now living in a global village. This has created room for better human interaction as people have now become more aware of other people’s culture and has reduced the stereotypes we once had of different cultures.
The above has been made possible through the use of technology.  I think the birth of internet in the 1980s opened a wide door for this in my own opinion. As the likes of blogger, my space, yahoo mail and message, Facebook, twitter and so on came into place, the intercultural communication grew and individuals became more aware of other people’s way of life.

Believe me or not we are more likely to accept what we have knowledge of than what we do not know. Saying this in line with human interaction, individuals began seeing other in a better light. However, when interaction became frequent awareness was created and is still being created through social media most especially.

With the frequent human interaction, awareness was made after which it progressed into cultural appreciation. A very good example of this is the case of ’’ Ellenbaby’’ as she is commonly known on the social media. I do not know how her love for African food and culture began but the help of social media which is part of globalization, she is now loved, accepted and appreciated the more daily by Africans worldwide.

I am not saying there was no human interaction before this era, I am only saying with it the help , a wider audience is being reached. Remember before the 80s, planes were flown and people travelled but this was largely restricted to individuals who had much money to spare for such luxury.

Another good globalization has brought our way is the improved business transactions and economic growth in recent time.
Growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, business transactions were not tas easy as there  are now. There were no online stores, the likes of DHL services and FedEx were there but we did not have the luxury of tracking our goods or products online from the comfort of our offices and homes. At least I can attest to in my country.

I remember vividly back then,if you were living in a country  like mine in Africa and you needed something  in the United Kingdom or the United States, you would travel over there  to buy or wait for someone you knew  who was coming over to  buy and bring for you . But in recent times, with the aid of globalization, one can easily purchase goods from the comfort of their homes through online platform such eBay, Amazon, AliExpress and the likes and get then shipped without even taking step.

This system has brought about development and employment to many individuals. As you know, online transaction involves a lot of people. When you place the order, an individual makes sure that your order is processed. Which means that one has to be employed to do that job and there comes source of income for someone right there. Also, the online transaction includes the bank which is beneficial to someone, so does the shipping company benefits as a result of your transaction.

As this process goes on, income is being generate by individuals and family needs are met as a result of employment. Which means you could be in South America and put a smile on someone’s face in Europe.  Also through the importation and exportation of goods and services, there is growth of different economies.

Globalization has created awareness and brought to an end many injustices and improved human rights. Due to the current interconnectedness of our world , many cases have been brought to the light and handled differently than they would had been handled in the past. I remember the case of a Sudanese woman a few years ago who was sentenced to death by hanging for apostasy.  She was waiting to give birth before she would be hung. However, the media  got know about it and carried  on the case until justice was brought to her.

If such a case had taken place twenty or more years ago, it would not had gotten public, let alone around the globe. However, with the aid of social media which is a fraction of globalization, campaign and petitions were made until the lady received her freedom.

In the case of human right, we have seen increased campaigns and advocacy for girls and woman concerning FGM (female genital mutilation). The attention of the world has been drawn to such deeds and many have risen against it. Though this practice has not stopped in some society, there is rapid reduction and even those who carry out such acts are more careful due to the larger society view on the matter. There is now FGM awareness Day which is 6thof February every year to eradicate such act.

Another human right that has been growing swiftly due to globalization is right to education. Though we cannot boast of formal education reaching the whole world, the level of literacy has quickly grown as result of globalization.

Also globalization has brought about intercontinental collaboration. In this new era, we have seen more global cooperation, countries are more willing to sit and negotiate their differences than rush into war than in the time past. This is due to globalization which has made us all dependent on one another .

Also we have seen recently  that an form of crisis in one country has a way of affecting the rest of the world directly or indirectly . Let take the case of United States economic recession of 2008, 2009. Many other countries were affected , this was due to the fact that people from other countries had also invested in the US economy and immediately there was an issue, they were also affected . Also due to globalization, there are more economic blocs which is bringing  development to the world as a whole.
